The integration of mobile learning technology in educational settings, especially in underserved areas, has garnered significant interest in recent years. This study focuses on two contrasting communities in Baja California, Mexico, examining how mobile technology is used in education in an urban slum and a rural village. The aim is to shed light on how these technologies interact with various socio-economic contexts and how they influence educational experiences.

Methodology

The research involved a sample of 160 second-grade children from two public primary schools, selected through convenience sampling. A combination of achievement tests, observations, surveys, and interviews were used to gather data. The primary focus was to assess the impact of mobile learning technology on literacy development and to explore the socio-economic factors influencing its effectiveness.

Findings and Discussion

The study revealed distinct differences in the impact of mobile technology on education in rural and urban settings. In the rural village, where educational resources and technology exposure were limited, the introduction of mobile learning technology had a more significant impact compared to the urban school. This difference is attributed to higher socio-economic status and increased parental involvement in education in the urban areas. Surprisingly, the success of mobile technology integration showed no strong correlation with parents' education levels, teachers' experience, or the existing school infrastructure.

The adoption of mobile learning technology was predominantly driven by the students themselves, with a rapid and enthusiastic uptake. However, the full potential of these devices as continuous learning tools was not fully realized, as they were primarily confined to classroom use due to concerns over loss and maintenance.

Limitations and Future Research

The study acknowledges several limitations, such as high attrition rates and the need for more comprehensive research designs. Future research aims to expand the scope of the study to include a broader range of subjects, educational outcomes, and more robust methodologies.

This research highlights the significant potential of mobile technology in addressing educational disparities, particularly in underserved communities. It emphasizes the need for further investigation into the role of mobile technology in providing equitable educational opportunities and advocates for innovative approaches to tackle educational inequalities globally.
